Quality Knife Companies

Knives manufacturers have a colorful history, just as the famous saying that "the history of the world is the history of great men" applies, the history of a great knife is also about the history of the inspired individual who produced some variation over one of the most basic of instruments. Let's take a look at some famous knife manufacturers and find out their history and inspiration.

Victorinox is one of the most famous knive companies in the world - most famous for its Swiss army knife. Karl Elsener belonged to Ibach, Switzerland. He was a manufacturer of knives, and actually was the sole supplier to produce knives to the Swiss army. He established his company in 1884, and named it in honor of his mother as Victorinox. Victorinox's famous competitor Wenger. In 1908, both companies shared the contract to produce knives forthe Swiss army. Victornix markets their products as Original Swiss Army Knives whereas Wenger knives are known as Geniune Swiss Army Knives.

Today, Carl Elsener Sr. and his son, Carl Elsener Jr manage the company and employ approximately one thousand people worldwide. This is in the fourth generation of a family business. Rather than Swiss army knives, Victorinox also manufactured multi tools like luggage boxes, watches etc with the Swiss army brand. Other than Swiss army brand kitchen cutlery tools were introduced. Forschner brand name became very popular in cutlery industry and won competition with Wusthof and JA Henckels. It is fully stamped blade knife.

Another older manufacturer of kitchen cutlery is Wusthof. This is a German company under the family ownership of Harald Wusthof, and has been producing knives since 1814. These are forged knives, and the company has a famous trident with three prongs of equal length as its logo. There are two manufacturing plants in Solingen, and these are some of the most famous knives in the world. Among the product lines include the Classic, the Grand Prix, Ikon, and Culinar series.

Global kitchen knives were introduced in 1983 from Japanese designer Komin Yamada. They are another extremely prestigious brand of knives and are among the great innovators in the knives industry. Their knives are composed of vanadium stainless steel. Yoshida Metal Industry is the corporate parent, and Global is their line of one piece stainless steel knives. This integrated handle and blade design has a superior cutting ability, balance, and precision. Yoshida's aim with global was to combine Japanese precision, Italian design, and German durability together. The blade is first heated to 1000 degrees Celsius, and then cooled to a sub-zero temperature, and finally tempered for four hours. Their special blade has convex cross-secdard knives.

Another modern knife manufacturer is Füritechnics, and Austrailian company founded in Brisbane in 1996 by Mark Henry. Their most famous knife is the east-west knife, a cross between the Japanese Santoku blade, and the French Chef knife. Some Furi knives, as they are commonly known, have a copper counterweight that is used to keep the knife balanced. As the knife blade loses mass, the coppertail can also be shaved.

Economical Cooks Will Enjoy High Quality Victorinox Cutlery

Victorinox is a company that is perhaps best known for creating Swiss Army knives. But did you know that they also manufacture high quality kitchen knives? As a matter of fact, the company's founder Karl Elsener had been making fine kitchen knives for thirteen years before the creation of the Swiss Army Knife.

Victorinox Cutlery has long been a favorite of professionals in North America. They are comparable with other high end brands, but they are often less expensive. Like all high quality knives should be, they are made from high-carbon stainless steel. Victorinox has its own special process for edge honing so that the blade remains as sharp as possible for a long time.

The blades have a full tang, meaning that they extend all the way through the handle. This makes for a very strong knife that is more sturdy than those that are simply joined at the bolster. There are a variety of handle types, like Rosewood, and their patented Fibrox Handles, which include a textured surface for better grip.

As opposed to some other brands, most Victorinox Cutlery products are stamped, which makes for a less expensive knife. Instead of being heat forged, they are cut from cold-rolled sheets of steel. These types of blades are lighter, meaning your hand won't tire as quickly. They do offer a line of forged knives, however, but be prepared to spend more for this type of set than the stamped ones.

You can buy these knives separately or in sets. Block sets are often more economical, giving you more for the money you spend. A popular set from this company is the 8-Piece Block Set, which includes a parer, boning knife, chef's knife, bread knife, a sliver, a honing steel, kitchen shears, and an oak storage block.

As with all high quality knives, proper care is key to their longevity. Always hand wash your knives and dry them completely before storing them away. Take care to store them in a safe place, such as a knife block, magnetic strip, or case. Simply keeping them in a drawer will dull the blade as well as promote chipping and pitting.

Those who love to cook, but don't want to break the bank buying professional knives, will greatly benefit from the use of Victorinox Cutlery. They still feature all the qualities that more expensive brands do. The economical cook will love this brand.

The Victorinox Swiss Army Knife - 125 Years of Quality

The Victorinox Swiss Army knife has been a brand name the world has trusted for 125 years, and that's quality you can trust. The first time it was registered was 6-12-1897, and the company was founded by Carl Elsener. Did you know that there are over 34,000 of these knives that leave the factory in Switzerland every single day? Most of these - about 90% in fact - are exported around the world. The knife gets its name from the fact that - you guessed it - the Swiss army recruits receive upon entering the army. (Yes, the Swiss have an army!)

What's the big deal about these knives? First off, the history is a rich tale involving some rather industrious forward-thinking business minds, especially that of Carl Elsener. At a time where the industrial revolution had barely begun, Carl took a chance and decided he'd help put a stop to unemployment by providing jobs at the plant. He also was one of the first to make that flying leap into progress by moving the hand-crafted production into a fully-blown industrial system, at a time when such a move was a bona fide risk. Thank goodness he did!

Now, you can count on the over 100 Swiss Army knife models to be at the ready in a pinch when you need them most. If you happen to live on the moon - good luck! - no worries, NASA takes the knives with them when they fly missions. If you happen to go to White House, don't be surprised to receive one for a parting gift from the President. If you happen to be on top of Mt. Everest - guess what? The knives have made it there, too, saving lives and saving headaches one tool at a time.

With over a hundred models to choose from, it may be daunting to think of the right fit. No worries, their website has a "tool match" app that will allow you to find the right fit. What if you break it? What then? Well, first off - they aren't "cheap," but they're also affordable! Many knives can be found in the $20-$100 range, with models ranging up to thousands of dollars - if you were one of the lucky few to buy their collector's gold, platinum and silver models earlier this year (2009-for the 125th anniversary). Secondly, if you do happen to break a blade or tool, Victorinox has a great warranty system on all their products.

You'll love your knife, no matter which model you wind up with. Every kid inside of us wants one - just in case!
